A corruption of Absolom, which see. Thomas Esplane, witness in 1500 (Cawdor p. 106), and John Esplene was burgess of Stirling in 1564 (SBR.). Robert Esplein was in Dunfermline, 1567 (Dunfermline), and David Espline in Hiltoune of Guthrie, 1583, and eight more are recorded in Brechin Commissariot Record. Janet Espleane was married in Edinburgh, 1610 (Edinb. Marr.), Grisel Hespline in Perth was accused of setting help from a witch, 1623 (Chronicle of Perth, p. 91). William Esplene was cultellar in Stirling, 1652 (SBR., p. 300), and James Esplen appears in Dunfermline, 1653 (Lamont, Diary, p. 60), Henry Esplin was a brewer in Cannogait, Edinburgh, 1678 (Edin. App.).
