The name "Essenstam" comes from the Netherlands and means "trunk of an ash tree". The family tree goes back to around the year 1680, when a young boy was found as an orphan under an ash tree. He was named 'Jan Jacob Essenstam'.

Originally the family's roots lie near the city of Apeldoorn, but since WW2 the family has started branching off into other area's. Two brothers: Jan & Arie, were orphaned during the war. Arie ended up in a foster family in Rotterdam, the oldest daughter of which he fell in love with and eventually married to. They had one son: Gertjan Essenstam.

Jan on the other hand joined the dutch military and fought in the dutch indies (modern day indonesia). As the war turned for the worst, Jan and a small group of dutch marines fled the region by night on a small minesweeper, cloaked as an island during the day. Eventually ending up in Australia. There he had several kids too.
