ETTALE: Probably from Etwall in England. A surname closely identified with Aberdeen. Walter de Ettale, burgess of Aberdeen in 1362, may be the Walter de Ettale who witnessed a deed of sale in the same burgh in 1383 (REA., I, p. 105; II, p. 284). Nicholaus de Etale held land 'in vico de le grene' in Aberdeen in 1382 (RMS., I, 682), and Johannes de Etal who witnessed an instrument of concord between the bishop of Aberdeen and John de Forbes, dominus ejusdem, in 1391 (REA., I, p. 189), may be the John de Etale who grafted a writ to the Carmelites of Aberdeen in 1399 (Friars, p. 22). William of Etale was bailie of Stirling in 1410 (ER., IV, p. 125), and John Ettale was admitted burgess of Aberdeen in 1440 (CRA., p. 396; NSCM,, I, p. 6). William Ettale was chaplain and procurator "pontis de Pulgoveny" 'CRA., p. 10), Thomas Ettale was presbyter of the diocese of Aberdeen and notary public in 1461 and 1463 (REA., II, p. 91; RAA., II, 148), and Andrew Ettall was presbyter of Murthlac in 1506 (REA,, II, p. 96). John Ettail, chaplain, who witnessed the testament of John Ersldne of Dun in 1513 (SCM., IV, p. 12) may be the John Ettell, presbyter of St. Andrews diocese and notary public in 1526 (REB., II, 180).
