A surname found in Aberdeenshire. Patrik Ettirshank was juror on an assize in Aberdeen in 1597 (SCM., I, p. 162), and Alexander Attershank is recorded in Curquhattachie in 1623 (RSCA., II, p. 269). John Ettershank appears in Aberdeen in 1650 (SCM., V, p. 170), Alexander Ettershank was deacon convener of trades in the same burgh in 1666 (Bain, Guilds, p. 44), and Katherine Atterschank is recorded in Dundee in 1621 (Brechin). Weekley (p. 140) says "from dial. edder, etter, a thin rod used in fence making.".
