In classical mythology Evander (more correctly Euander), son of Hermes and Carmentis or Carmenta, led a colony from Pallanteum in Arcadia into Latium and built a city on the Palatine Hill sixty years before the Trojan war. Ewander Murchieson of Octerteir took the test in Rossshire in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 417). The name in Greek means "good man.".
