Evanson Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Evan,' a Welsh personal name.
Howell ap Yevan. Rolls of Parliament.
David ap Evan. Calendar of Proceedings in Chancery, temp. Elizabeth I.
Joane Howell ap Evan Sais: Visit. Gloucestershire (Harleian Society X).
The first form of the name seems to have been Jevon, then Yevan, lastly and permanently, Evan; v. Jevon.
'son of Evan,' which see. In 1695 an Act of Parliament was passed to allow Evan MacGregor, merchant in Edinburgh, to retain the surname of MacGregor on condition of his children becoming Evanson (APS., IX, p. 355). In an Act anent the Clan Gregor, passed in April 1603 "It wes ordanit that the name of mc gregoure sulde be altogidder abolisched And that the haill persounes of thatt clan suld renunce thair name and tak thame sum vther name And that They nor nane of thair posteritie suld call thame selffis gregor or mc gregoure thairefter vnder payne of deade" (APS., IV, p. 550).
Evan’s (Son), Evan’s Son v. Evan.
The genitive of Evan, a common Welsh baptismal name, equivalent to John.
The son of Evan.
The Welsh for John, the same as Johns. Evan, eofn, fearless, bold.
Evans. —Exceedingly numerous in North and South Wales and in the adjacent English counties of Shropshire and Monmouth. Thence it has spread, but in rapidly diminishing numbers to the midland counties and to the south - west of England. It is absent or singularly rare in the northern counties, a line from the Humber to the Mersey sharply defining its northward extension. Not one of the coast counties, from Norfolk round to the borders of Devon, is represented in my list. It would, therefore, appear that the invasion of England by the Evanses is by no means a complete one, though their advance on the metropolis is indicated by their scanty outposts in Beds, Bucks, and Berks.
Forebears Note: Monmouth(shire) was and is a Welsh county.
