Evensen Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
(Swedish) The son of Even (gracious gift of Jehovah).
User-submitted Reference
For the Norwegian variant Evensen, the name has no meaning other than being part of the old northern naming tradition. Before the 16th and 17th century (and until the 1900s in the countryside) it was common practice in Norway to give a child its last name from the father's first name and a patronym. The father's name + sen/son (son) for boys and datter/dottir (daughter) for girls. Many families kept the last instance as a family name when this tradition ended.
For example:
Even Olsen (son of Ola)
Oscar Evensen (son of Even)
Einar Evensen (new family name, kept around 1900. Name would have been Einar Oscarson in the old tradition)
The country of Iceland still keep this old naming tradition.
