Everal Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname stems exclusively from South West Shropshire, though its origin cannot be traced with certainty. The sparsity of early mentions suggest that it has probably become corrupted. Considering this, it should be noted that the same individuals are recorded interchangeably as Deverall, Deverell, Deverill, Everell and Everall in various different records from the 17th century in the vicinity of Ludlow. The intrusion of the 'D' is very unusual and is likely a preservation of the original name; but why the name should be recorded without the 'D' for at least 150 years prior in the county is just as mysterious. One possibility is that scribes and officials omitted the 'D,' thinking it was the Norman prefix 'd which had fallen out of use. Deverell is a surname that originates in Wiltshire, and is, in my opinion, the most likely source of the name. This surname was adopted by a landowning family living in the Deverill valley. Deverill is derived from the Welsh 'dwfr' (water) and 'halh' (valley.) Thus the surname means, 'descendant of one who lived in the water valley.' An alternative meaning is a derivation from 'eofor' (boar) and 'halh' (land) - 'descendant of one who lived at the boar's land.' However, there is no evidence of such a place.
