This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Avery'; v. Every. Avery is strongly represented in the United States, especially in Boston. This is easily accounted for. Jacob Averie (aged 33) and George Averie (aged 33) sailed for Virginia in 1635. Others of the same name followed, (v. Hotten's Lists of Emigrants.)
