EVIOT: Eviot of Balhousie was one of the oldest families connected with Perth and Angus. The history of the name has been obscured by the blunders of transcribers of early charters who almost uniformly mistook the second u for n. The name is territorial from Eviot in Angus. Willelmus Vniot granted seven acres in the territory of Inueramun to the church of S. Michael of Scone, c. 1190 (Scon, p. 36). Willelmus Vniec, perhaps the same person, witnessed a confirmation charter by William the Lion of the land of Ahenepobbel a. 1214 (Scon, p. 19). Philip Vuieth witnessed a charter by Hugo de Nidun of lands in Fife, c. 1204—28 (SHSM, IV, p. 312), and as Philip Vnieth witnessed the grant, c, 1211—14, by Swan, son of Thor, to the Abbey of Scon (Scon, p. 18). Ricardus uuieth witnessed the gift of a croft by Tristrem to the Abbey of Inchaffray c. 1208 (Inchaffray, p. 25), and as Ricardus vnyneth he was one of the witnesses to a charter by Walter, son of Alan, to the monks of Scon in 1233 (Scon, p. 91). He may be the Richard Vuyeth (Vuyet, Owvet, or Ouyeth) who witnessed a charter by Ade filius Edulphi and another by Constantine filius Ade fil. Edulphi in favor of the Abbey of Newbattle c. 1230 and c. 1245 (Neubotle, p. 19, 21, 26). Richard Vuieth or Vuyeth, perhaps the same person, appears as sheriff of Lanarch c. 1230—35 (Neubotle, p. 105,107), and may be the R. Vinet who witnessed a charter relating to the earldom of Lennox to Maldouen in 1238 (Levenax, p. 2). David huniet granted the church of Melginge (Melginch) to the Abbey of Holyrood c. 1230 (LSC., 66), his sons, Alexander and Philip, being among the witnesses. Alexander Uniet who witnessed a grant by Thomas de Lundin, father of Alan Durward, to the nuns of North Berwick, c. 1220 (CMN., 11), may be the Alexander Hunyot who attested a Peeblesshire charter in the reign of Alexander 11 (REG., p. 128), and the Alexander Hunyeth, sheriff of Lanark in 1264 (ER., I, p. 30). Sir Alexander Huwyet attested a charter by Henry de Graham c. 1230 (HMC., App. to II. Rep., p. 166). Alexander Huuietht or Ouyoth appears as witness in charters relating to the Abbey of Newbattle c. 1240 (Neubotle, 144,146), and Alexander Oviot is mentioned in a mandate directed to the bishops of St. Andrews and Aberdeen in 1264 (Pap. Lett., I, p. 408). William Vnyeth was fined in 1266 (ER., I, p. 27), and Maucolum Wyet of Anegos who rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 213) was one of the family. In 1296 a writ was issued to the sheriffs of Lanark and Edinburgh in behalf of Richard Ovyot (Bain, II, 832), another Richard Ovyot was proprietor of Cassendally in Fife in the reign of David II (RMS., I, 205). David Ovide was burgess of Dundee in 1412 (HP., II, p. 152), and in 1422 a charter was granted by Murdoch, duke of Albany to John Eviot, son and heir of William Eviot. of the lands of Balhousie resigned by the said William. The S iohannis eviiot is appended to a charter by John Eviot to his son, Robert Eviot, of all me berony of Ralhousie in 1448 (Macdonald, 892). Richard Eviot (Eviott, Eveot) is in record in 1461, 1464, and 1484 (Atholl, p. 708; Macdonald, 893,894), William Unzet appears as witness in Glasgow in 1551 (Protocols I), Margaret Eviot was married in Perth in 1562 (Sc. Ant., I, p. 102), and Colin Eviott of Balhussie became cautioner for the Provost of Methven in 1588 (Methven, p. 77). The surname was not uncommon in Perth in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, but appears now to be quite extinct (Cowan, Ancient capital of Scotland, p. 193—195).
