The surname of an old family in Galloway, who are said to have come originally from Roxburghshire. Andrew Ewart was treasurer of Kirkcudbright in 1583 (Ramage, p. 379). Nigel Ewart was retoured heir of his grandfather in the lands of Bodisbeg in Annandale in 1607 (Refours, Dumfries, 43), and John Ewert was heir of John Ewert in Toms of Keltoun in 1615 (Refours, Kirkcudbright, 114). John Eouart died in 1683 and was buried in Foulden churchyard. Thomas Yewart in Tyninghame, 1688 (RPC., 3. ser. XIII, p. 245). The name is of local origin from Ewart neer Wooler in Northumberland. The place name appears in 1218 as Ewurthe, in 1255 as Ewrth, 1288 Ewarth, 1579 Eward, and 1589 as Ewertt, from Old English ea-weorih, river-enclosure, the place being encircled on three sides by the rivers Glen and Till (Mawer, Place-names of Northumberland, p. 79). Euart 1608.
