Thomas le Ewer rendered homage for his lands in Edinburghshire, 1296. His seal bears a hunting horn and S' Thome Levver (Bain, II, p. 208,552). The lands for which he rendered homage were no doubt the lands called Ewerland, near Cramond, held by Hugh "le Ewer" of the Crown before 1335. In 1505 the lands were in possession of Walter Chepman, burgess of Edinburgh, and Scotland's first printer. The ewer was a servant who supplied guests with washing utensils at meals. The name perhaps now lost in Ure.
Shortened from (Mac)ure, which see. Dr. Andrew Ure (1787-1857), a distinguished chemist, was born in Glasgow. As forename (for Iver) we have Ure and Urie Campbell of Strachur, 1545 (HP., IV, p. 29).
