This surname is derived from an occupation. A wright. The name has been assumed through being habitually set down by some clerkly pen in Latin as 'Faber' instead of 'Wright.' The first three following occur on the same page:

Alan Faber de Thrylstane (Thirlstane) witnessed a confirmation of Snawdoun to Dryburgh, c. 1350 (Dryburgh, 232), and a later Alan Faber was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1466 (NSCM., I, p. 19).
