A Galloway surname. Shortened from (Mac)feat, which see. Thomas Faid was curate of Larg (Lairg) in Sutherland, 1515 (OPS., II, p. 697). John Fead appears at Kirk of Holy-wood, 1657, and two more are recorded in Dumfriesshire (Dumfries). John Faid and William Faid, sons of Duncan Faid in Kirkmahoe, 1686, and Duncan Fied in Newlands in Kirkmaho, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 405—406). The brothers James, John, and Thomas Faed were eminent artists. Thomas (1826—1900) painted (Longfellow's) 'Evangeline,' one of the best known of his works. Fade 1685.
