(English) the Anglo-Saxon pers. name Fag(a [prob. Old English fág, spotted, discoloured; or from a Teutonic stem seen in Old Saxon fagan = Old English fægen-Old Norse feginn, glad, happy] Peter Fag.—Hundred Rolls
Feg occurs in Domesday, and Fag in the H.R. The Kentish family were long connected with the parish of Bye, co. Sussex, and perhaps derived their name from lands there, still called Fagg farm.
(Saxon.) Fag, variable or many colored; may be bestowed on the first possessor from his variable disposition. Fag, a laborious drudge.
Fagg is a very old Kentish name. The Fagges of the 16th and 17th centuries were a family of influence and position, and had their principal home at Chartham (EL). Lower, however, says that they were also long connected with Rye in the adjacent county of Sussex. Further back we have the Fagges at Willesborough in the 14th century (H.). A member of this family was created a baronet by Charles II., and Sir John Fagg was vicar of Sarre a hundred years ago; during the first half of last century, several, of the family were buried in Ham church (H.). Fagg is an ancient English name; we find it six centuries since in Oxfordshire and Somerset (H. R.).
