Andro Fair of the Bradhirst, baize deput to John of Craufurd (Prestwick, p. 24), and Thomas Fare witnessed an instrument of 1446 (ibid., p. 114). John Faire was presbyter of Glasgow diocese, 1507 (Friars Ayr, p. 73), and Isobel Fair in Easter Caldstrem, 1675, and four more of the name are recorded in Lauder Commissariot Record. Margret Fair was charged in Inverness in 1585 with lightly deriding "the law of God and man in committing of the chryme of fornicatioun and adultre" (Rec. Inv., I, p. 299). Farie 1550, Fary 1549, Farye 1551. Lower and Harrison suggest the name is from the adjective fair "blond, handsome," and Bardsley says it is of local origin.
