This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of the fair clough.'— Faireloth is a curious corruption. But this is a poor attempt at disguising the origin of a surname as compared with the name of the learned Calvinist, Dr. Featly, vicar of Lambeth, much lauded by Fuller and A. Wood, who died in 1645. He is only known to fame as Dr. Featly, but he was born Fairclough, as all biographical notices show, ad ex.' Life of Thomas Fuller' (J. E. Bailey). This alone willremind the reader of some of the difficulties we have to contend with. In the second entry below we see how still further the name was distorted.
