Of local origin from Fairholm (Lanark Retours, 98), now Farme. A surname in Midlothian for several generations. Jemet Fairum was married in Edinburgh, 1604 Edinb. Marr.). Marion Fairholm appears in Overtoun of Quodquen, 1621, and three more of the name are in record in Lanark (Lanark CR.). John Fairholm, merchant burgess of Edinburgh, died in 1646 (Douglas, Peerage, I, p. 75), and John Ferholme, merchant burgess there in 1655 (Inquis, 3997) may have been his son. George Fairholme, tanner at the West Port of Edinburgh, 1653 (ibid., 3735). Fairholm of Craigiehall an old family in West Lothian. The name has been shortened to Ferme, which see.
