From the barony of Fairley in the parish of Largs. Nisbet (Heraldry, II, p. 29) says the family of this name in Ayrshire were descended from Robert de Ross, a branch of the Rosses of Tarbet in Cunningham, proprietors of the lands of Fairley, whence they took their name. The first of the family of whom any notice has been found was William de Fairlie, who was included in a pardon granted by Edward III at Berwick, 1335, for all the crimes committed by him in the war with England (Rot. Scot., I, p. 381). "It is rather remarkable that so few notices of this family are to be found, and that such as exist are of such a disconnected and fragmentary nature" (Pont, p. 137). William Farley was witness in 1368 (Coll. AGAA., II. p. 148). The name also appears in record as Farnley. Allan de Farnley witnessed a charter by Sir Hugh Eglinton, c. 1370 (Macfarlane, II, p. 333), and John of Farnle witnessed a sasine of 1446 (Irvine, I, p. 137).
