Fairlie Surname Meaning
From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Fairleigh' or 'Fairley,' (1) a parish in Somerset, seven miles from Bath; (a) a parish in Hampshire, near Basingstoke; (3) also 'of Farley,' parishes in Kent and Surrey, and chapelries and townships in Staffordshire and Wiltshire.
Adam Farlegh, Somerset, 1 Edward III: Kirby's Quest.
Jacob de Farlegh, Wiltshire, 1273. Hundred Rolls.
Hugh de Farleye, Somerset, ibid.
The family of Fairlie of Braid claimed descent from a natural son of Robert II (Nisbet, I, p. 289), and the family arms are appealed to in support of this theory. The claim, however, rests on no very satisfactory evidence and is in conflict with historical records. William Fairlie had a charter from Robert I of the lands of Inuerleith (RMS., I, App. II, 175), and Braid was held by William Fairlie in reign of Robert II, when he resigned the lands of Bavillay (now Bavelaw) to his son John upon the latter's marriage with Elena, a natural daughter of Sir Henry Douglas of Lochleven (RMS., I, 694,782). "It is plain, therefore, that the royal origin, if true at all, must be thrown back to an earlier date" (Stodart, II, p. 183). More probably they are descended from William Fayrly or Fayrley, one of the custumars of Edinburgh, burgess there in 1329, who although unmentioned by either Bower or Wyntoun, seems to have played an important part in the capture of Edinburgh Castle from the English in 1342. In 1329 he advanced a sum to the king (ER., I, p. 166), and in 1331 was clerk to the chamberlain. He is most probably the Fairley who soon after this date appears in possession of Braid in succession to the family of de Braid, and was ancestor of the family of Fairley of Braid, whose representative in later days married the daughter of John Knox. John de Farle, juror on inquest on lands of Swinton in 1408 (Swinton, p. xviii), and Thomas de Fayrle or Farle, burgess of Edinburgh, juror in Edinburgh, 1428 (RMS., II, 115; RAA., II, 61). William Farnly, notary public in Dunfermline, 1483 (RD., p. 372), and Johannes de Farnly de eodem in record, 1499 (Simon, 72). William Farnelie was appointed sergeant of court in Selkirk, 1524 (Home, 35), and Phylpie and Dand Fairlie were tenants under Kelso Abbey, 1567 (Kelso, p. 528). In the Registrum Cartarum Ecclesie Sancti Egidii de Edinburgh the name appears very frequently in the spellings Fairele, Farinle, Fairie, Fairlie, Fairnlie, Farinlee, Farle, Farnele, Farnly, Farnlye, Faryinle, Fayrle, Fayrley, and Ferle. Farnely (of Braid) 1534, Ffarly 1737. See also Fairley.
