From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This surname is derived from a nickname. 'the faithful.' Soon after the Reformation Faithful became a baptismal name, rivalling Thankful among the Puritans. It is still in use in Devon and Cornwall.

'Faithful Teate, minister at Sudbury, Suffolk': Sibbes' Works.

1640. Baptised — Benjamin, son of Faithful Bishop: St. Columb Major.

1713. Buried — Mary, d. Faithfull and Joan Cock: ibid.

In the Cornwall Directory I find at Newquay, in the parish of St. Columb Major, the name of' Faithful Veal, shoemaker.' Thus for 250 years this title has been fontal in that ancient parish. As seen above it was applied to both sexes. Bunyan gave the name to the martyr of Vanity Fair:

'Sing, Faithful, sing, and let thy name survive.

For though they killed thee, thou art yet alive.'

This is strictly true even from a directory point of view.
