It could derive, directly or through hypocoristic, from the Germanic name Faldus, Falda, existing both as a name in its own right, and as an apheretic form of names such as Mafalda, Barufaldus, Strufaldus or similar.

The use of this name gives an example in a recording of the second half of the 1200 to Montaperti in the Sienese: '..Die iovis presentavit salmam j panis.' Die lune infrascripta presentavit salmam j panis et anon Die lune xxx agusti presentavit salmam j panis, Faldus Mellioris ... '.

The surname Faldi is Tuscan, specific of Florence and Prato.
