From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
FAHQUHARSON: 'son of Farquhar,' which see. As a clan or sept the Farquharsons are descended from Farquhar Macintosh, a grandson of the laird of Macintosh who came to Braemar before 1382 (Aboyne, p. 177). Even so late as 1620 the Farquharsons are styled Macintoshes. The Macintoshes seem to have had some claim to the lands of Birse, and in 1382 Ferchard Mcyntoschy was ordained to cease injuring the lands and inhabitants thereof, and to prosecute his claim to them according to law (REA., I, p. 136—137). David Fercharsoun was made burgess and guild brother of Aberdeen, 1440 (CRA., p. 395; NSCM., I, p. 6). Aytho Faurcharsone is mentioned in the will of Alexander Sutherland of Dunbeath, 1456 (Bonn. Misc., III p. 93). Findelay Farcharsone is in Strathdee, 1538 (Grant, III, p. 71), and Donald Farquharson in Braemar was appointed keeper of the king s forests of Braemar, etc., 1584 (Coll., p. 189). John Ferqrson in Dalhande, 1682 (Invercauld, p. 264). Henry Farquharson (d. 1739 or 1747), born in Aberdeenshire, was founder of the school of navigation in Moscow, Russia. Farquharson of Invercauld is named in Gaelic Mac Mhic Fhionnlaigh, from his descent from Finlay Mor who fell at the battle of Pinkie in 1547, Finlay Mor was said to have been buried in Inveresk churchyard, and the spot was long known as 'the long Highlandman's grave.' The Farquharsons rank as a sept of Clan Chattan. Farchyrson 1560, Faurcharson 1442, Ferquharsoun 1574, fiarquharsone 1664, ffarqrson 1693, Fourcharsoun 1456.
