I come from an Aegean island called Naxos. My grandfather once had a lawyer friend of the family to search the family tree.The first step was reaching Crete, a big island to the south of Greece with similar traditions, products and native accent to Naxos. There we meet a pre-version of my surname, Falkonakis (-akis is common for Cretan surnames). The story tells that some livestock thieves or some members of family that were in a "vendetta" with some others were sent to that "infertile rock", Naxos as an exile. A few migrated to some other islands as well, like Kos. After further research he found out that Falkonakis were immigrants from "Micra Asia", where they were rooted out from the land of their ancestors as soon as Turkey had claimed once more the region from Greece (1918-1922). The final step of this journey is the actual meaning of the surname - Falkoni were falcon trainers in the Byzantine Empire. The roots are obvious. The reason that you can find similar surnames across the Mediterranean is the reach of Byzantium and its culture, where falcon trainer was one of the professions to serve at court.
