A cultivator of the ground.
No doubt includes families of Norman and other origins. The earliest mention of the surname seems to be in Normandy 1195, when John Fermor occurs (Magni Rotuli Scaccarii Normanniae). The name was unfrequent in England c. 1272 (Rotuli Hundredorum). Of this name were the Fermors Earls of Pomfret, and the Baronets Farmer.
See Fearman. Or from the French, Fermier; from the Dutch, Vahrmeijer; a personal name.
Farmer: remains on the land, and has contributed to our nomenclature. Also Fermor.
