This surname is derived from a geographical locality. 'of Fernhill,' probably the small estate so-called in Nether Alderley, East Cheshire. (2) Local, 'of Farnhill,' a township in the parish of Kildwick, West Riding of Yorks, spelt Farnhill in the Yorkshire Poll Tax, 1379. Meg Fernwale is recorded in Aberdeen, 1408 (CWA., p. 312), Alan de Farnyle held land in Edinburgh in 1411 (Cambus., 94), Thomas Farnile or Fernile was a charter witness in the same burgh in 1468 (Neuhotle, 301,302), and Patrick Fernyll was hospitaller of Holy Trinity Church, Edinburgh in 1554 (Soltre, p. 111).
