Farraher Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

These two names are basically the same, both being anglicized forms of the Gaelic Irish Ó Fearchair.

Farraher is almost peculiar to counties Galway and Mayo while Fraher is mainly found in counties Waterford, south Tipperary and Limerick. Fraher appears to be a comparatively modern form: a county Limerick family is given as O'Farragher in a Fiant of 1601, and the Co. Tipperary Hearth Money Rolls of 1666-67have a number of Farrahers but no Fraher. Neither occurs in any of the usual sources such as the Four Masters, An Leabhar Muimhneach, Ormond Deeds, Prerogative and Diocesan will abstracts, nor were they numerous enough to be included in the 1659-60 census summary (from which it must be remembered Co. Galway is missing). The earliest reference to the name I have found is to Thomas O'Fareghyr, of Cahirduggan in north Co. Cork, who in 1307 suffered distraint, having given pledge for a man who absconded: in another document relating to the same case his name is spelt O'Ferther.

The register of the householders in Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, made by Father Francis Xavier Blake in 1783, includes seven families of Farraher. Modern birth registrations, which are officially recorded from 1864, indicate that that area and north Galway are still their homeland, while those for Fraher also confirm the statement as to locality made above.

Other recorded anglicizations of the name are Harragher and Raher. The latter is extant in Co. Waterford.

Ó Fearchair Fraher is the Munster form and Farraher the Connacht. Raher is a Co.
