A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Farrington is a well-known name in England and our Irish Farringtons came from that country at various times, some comparatively recently and some as early as the fourteenth century. The derivation of the name is simple: it is “of Farrington” a place in England; and it was originally written de Faryngton.

A Simon de Feringdon or de Farindon (which are possibly earlier synonyms of Farrington) occurs more than once in lists of Co. Louth jurors in 1306. In 1399 we find one de Faryngton Lord Treasurer and another a Baron of the Exchequer; by 1400 when Hugh Farringeton was commissioned to conduct a sworn enquiry into duties paid on wines etc. at Drogheda, the prefix de begins to be regularly dropped —— even the juror of a century earlier referred to above is mentioned once without it. There is reason to doubt whether descendants in the male line of any of these mediaeval officials are still extant. The name, however, was kept from dying out in Ireland by the arrival of later immigrants (for example the garrison at Trim in 1647 included Capt. Farrington's company of Col. Fenwick's regiment) but it has never become numerous. While not very closely associated with any particular place it is better known in Co. Cork than elsewhere. The most prominent family of the name there came from Lancashire about 1850.
