My family has told me that the Farwells are descendants of the bad prince John, when he had an affair with a barmaid. When I was informed that my descendants moved to Dunstable, Massachusetts from England they begged me to look up their history at the local library. I was surprised to find endless mention of Farwells in the local libraries. There is a Farwell St. in Nashua, NH, which used to be Dunstable at one point in history, later being separated as another state by the Nashua river. There is a "Farwell House" in Tyngsboro that was owned by Farwells who were part of the underground railroad, moving runaway slaves across the river to freedom. The owners felt it was haunted by a malevolent spirit. The owners opened a little tea shop there and I was told there is a hidden passage that led from top of the house to the basement. The owners were told "the spirit" was from when the underground railroad was operating through the house. The owner, Mr. Farwell, fell in love with a slave and had an affair with her. Although he supported her and their children she constantly insisted that he marry her, thus endangering the lives of everyone there and all those coming through the house in the underground railroad. Because she refused to be quiet about the matter she was killed.

The name means literally 'far well' (a well that is far away). From England originally, they settled in Dunstable, Massachusetts and records can be found of the Farwells and their adventures and travels in the Dunstable, and Tyngsboro, Massachusetts libraries. So they settled there and fought off the Indians and joined in the fight for independence from Great Britain. Records show that the townsfolk asked for reinforcements from England to fight off the Indians. There are graveyards in Groton, MA that contain Farwells. Often times the Farwells were involved in local politics and supported leaders of the communities. The Farwells moved west from this point. One Farwell moved to Utah with Joseph Smith.

There are Farwells to be found locally in this area and are in fact distantly related, one owns a funeral home in Nashua and there was a Farwell who was a director of the local Museum in Harvard, the Fruitland's Museum.
