A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

Apart from stating that Ó Fachtnáin is the Gaelic form of Faughnan Woulfe gives no information about this name. Nineteenth century birth statistics indicate that it belongs to Counties Leitrim and Longford; and comparative statistics suggest that it is one of the few names which was as numerous at the end of the century as it was in the middle.

It is possible that an early anglicization of the name was Faughey, a form which seems to be now quite obsolete. If we accept this as synonynous with Faughnan it follows that the sept was of considerable importance in the sixteenth century as a Fiant of 1588 shows. This document is of some general interest and the abstract of it, printed in the 16th Report of the Deputy Keeper of Public Records Ireland, is therefore given in full: “Grant (under commission, 7 Dec. xxviii) to Gillernewe Ó Faghny or m'Faghny of Rathclyne, Co. Longford, esq., captain and chief of the territory of Calloe same co.: of all manors, castles, lands, and services, in Rathklen, Forkill, Dromharfe, Aghadain, Agholughan, Cooleteggell, and Ferrinegiragh or Ferrenkragh, and elsewhere within the territory of Callo, surrendered by his deed of 20 May, xxx.; also half the goods of fugitives and persons attainted of treason or felony, and all goods of waifs and strays, and fines within the territory. To hold for ever, by the service of a twentieth part of a knight's fee. This grant not to alter any rent or service reserved by composition, nor shall it pass any possessions vested in the crown otherwise than by the surrender of Gillernew. He may once in each quarter hold a court baron, and twice a year a court of view of frank pledge at Rathklen, or elsewhere within the premises, before his seneschal. This grant shall not prejudice the rights of the heirs of N."

Malby, knt, or any other of the queen's subjects, except to the title of captain or chief of the Callo, which title is abolished. —— 22 June, xxx”.
