From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

From the lands of Fans or Faunes near Earlston, Berwickshire. Richard de Fawnes, c. 1150—90, gave to his brother David, son of David de Graham, two tofts in Melostane (Mellerstain) to be held of the said Richard and his heirs. About the year 1200 the same Richard de fauhnes gifted two tofts in Melokeston to the Abbey of Kelso (Kelso, p. 104). Ricardus de Faunesse witnessed a confirmation charter by Earl Patrick of Dunbar to the Priory of Coldingham, a. 1232 (CCAC., p. 6). Adam de Faunes, son of deceased Richard de Faunes, gave to the Abbey of Kelso a charter of the two tofts of Melostane which David de Graham, his uncle, held of his brother, c. 1230, and c. 1260 there is recorded a confirmation of the grant of lands of Melocstan previously made by Adam de Fauhnes (Kelso, 137). John Fawnies was citiner of Brechin in 1600 and Alexander Fawnis citiner in 1610 (Brechin). Patrick Fowns or Phauns, chapman in Thirlstone Miln, 1686 (RPC., 3. ser. XII, p. 369,375), and William Fawns, chirothecarius, burgess of Brechin, 1691 (Inquis., 7203).
