(1) From Fearn in Rossshire. Sir Andrew Ferae was one of the chaplains of the cathedral church of Dornoch in 1512, Sir Robert Fern or Ferne was curate of Golspie in 1546, and curate of Kylmalie in the same year (OPS., II, p. 623,648, 649) and Sir John Ferne, who was presented to the chaplainry of Tain in 1517, is mentioned again in 1543 as Sir John Farny (RMS.), and as Sir John Feme, chaplain and notary at Lochlevyn, 1546 (Rollok, 3). David Fearne of Tarlogie took the Test in 1685 (RPC., 3. ser. XI, p. 417). The Ferns of that Ilk were followers of the earls of Ross See Macfeat. (2) From Fearn or Fern in Angus. In 1267 Peter de Ferne witnessed the charter of foundation of the Messyndew (Maison-dieu) at Brechin granted by William de Brechin. John Fern was burgess of Perth in 1432 (HP., II, p. 170), Christiane de Ferne was disturbed by robbers in 1436 (CRA., p. 392), Robert de Fern and Fynlai de Fern held land in Dundee in 1458 (REB., I, 185), and John Feymd was presbyter and notary public in St. Andrews diocese in 1567 (RHM., I, p. 27). John of Ferne was charged 'iv merges, or ellis half a chalder of vitale' for the mill of Ferne 1488 (ADC., Oct. 25, 1488), and George Ferne was archdeacon of Dunkeld (Stodart, II, p. 316).
