(English) belonging to Featherstonehaugh (Northumberland) [v. under Featherstone, and + Northern English and Scot, haugh, halgh, a river-side meadow, also a hillock; Old English halc, h(e)alh, a corner, slope] Featherstone Castle was built by the Featherstonehaughs, a family resident here from time immemorial.—Nat Gaz., sub nomine Featherstone, Northumberland.
The surname occurred as Feather-stonehalgh in Newcastle-on-Tyne as late as the eighteenth cent.
(English), Frith stan haugh, Peace-stone hillock? Camden says there were two stones on the lands called “fether stones,” which were the origin of the name. “Fether” is, however, the Anglo-Saxon for feather, wing; and what are feather-stones? They were probably erected to commemorate a truce made upon the spot, and called Frithestanes, Monuments of peace.
The Featherstones have been for ages one of the principal Weardale clans (Denham's "Slogans of the North").
