From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
Though by no means numerous now this name has been continuously associated with the barony of Ardee since the sixteenth century: in 1659 Petty's “census” recorded them as a principal Irish family in that barony. The sept originated in the Clones area, where the Co. Monaghan place-names Tiredigan and Ballyviddegan on both sides of Clones indicate the location, whence they moved in the eleventh century to south Monaghan and in due course over the Co. Louth border. In 1425 Neyll O'Fedegan and others were charged with abducting the chaplain of Nobber and were threatened with excommunication by the Bishop of Clogher.
