Feerick Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Mac Phiaraic This name is very closely identified with Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. SIF 67

A Guide to Irish Names (1964) by Edward MacLysaght

This is Mac Phiaraic in Irish, and was first anglicized, e.g. in the sixteenth century Fiants, as MacFeyrick; but the prefix Mac is quite obsolete in modern forms of the name. Few surnames are more closely identified with a particular place than Feerick, the homeland of which is Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo.

There were eleven Feerick families in Ballinrobe in 1783*, but none appears among the large landowners at any time: it does not, for example, occur in the Compossicion Booke of Conought (1585), in the Strafford Inquisition of County Mayo (1635) or in the Book of Survey and Distribution, Co. Mayo. The latter gives the proprietors in 1641 and the subsequent grantees under the Cromwellian Settlement and the Williamite forfeitures at the end of the century. Unfortunately Counties Mayo and Galway are missing from the “census” of 1659-60.
