It is related to modern German word fahne (flag, banner). In the German Imperial Army (Reichsheer) Fähnrichs ranked as cadet officers and until 1806 the rank was reserved for nobility only.

Fenrich de Gjurgjenovacis a notable family of German (Prussian) origin, whose members settled in present-day Croatia and Hungary in the late 19th century. They were involved in industrialization of eastern Croatia.
