The land of Andrew Fermour in Perth is mentioned, 1458 (RAA., II, 114), and in the following year William Fermore, presbyter, is in record (ibid., 129). Wilms Fermoir, notary public in Kirkwall, 1580 (OSR., I, p. 199). William Fermour, burgess of Crail, 1619, may be the William Fermor who was active as a notary in Shetland in 1602—03, "when he appears to have been intruded into the office of Fowde i.e. sheriff of Dunrossness, a post never held, except under force, by any one but a resident native" (Goudie, p. 213). John Fermour was retoured heir of David Fermour, burgess of Crail, his father, 1643 (Refours, Fife, 636). Originally it meant, one who held of another anything for a profitable use, and paid him a redditus or rent. Thus taxes, customs, &c. were farmed as well as lands. Le Farmer, and de la Fermer, are found in H.R. The family of Ferrnor (Baronet, 1725), came into England from France temp. Edward III., and settled in Sussex.
