From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history
From the old barony of the name, anciently Futhos or Fothes, in the parish of Foveran, Kincardineshire. Eadmund or Edmund de Fotheis and Alwinus or Aleuin, his son. who witnessed two charters between 1200—07 (RAA,, I, 93, 94) are probably the first recorded of the name. Fergus de Fothes, son of John de Fothes, received in 1289 from Alexander Cumyn, earl of Buchan, a charter of the whole tenement of Fothes (Illus., III, p. 112). Payments were made to John Fotis and to Walter de Fothes in 1328—9 (ER., I, p. 93,237), Eustace de Futhes was collector of contributions in Aberdeenshire, 1373 (Stodart, II), and Duncan Futhas and John Futhas were in Aberdeen in 1408 (CWA., p. 316). Andrew de Fothes was dominus ejusdem in 1423 (REA., I, p. 219). Duncan of Futhas had charter of a tenement in Kirkwall, Orkney, in 1435, and in 1447 was witness to a wadset of lauds there (REO., p. 190,330). Robert Futhes was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1491, and Andrew Futhes in 1498 (NSCM., I, p. 36, 39). Sir David Fudas had a tenement in Lanark, 1488 (Lanark, p. 5). Sir William Fudes, another cleric, was chancellor of Caithness, 1524 (OPS., II, p. 619), and Duncan and Gilbert Fuddes were witnesses in Aberdeen, 1597 (SCM., I, 135). Elizabeth Fiddes old charter of part of the lands of Waltoune alias Newbiging, 1600 (RD., p. 495). Thomas Fiddes was juror at Dornoch, 1603 (OPS., II, p. 644), and Robert Fiddes was admitted burgess of Aberdeen, 1621 (NSCM., I, p. 127). The surname is still prevalent in its parent district. Fitdeis 1590, Fouthas 1439, Futheis and Futhois 1439.
