From the occupation, a 'fiddler,' from ME. fytheler(e), fitheler. In 1496 we have record of a payment of nine shillings "to Rennet the fythelare at the kingis command" (ALHT., I, p. 274). Andrew Fidlar was cherged with wrongfully occupying land in Lanerk in 1498 (Lanark, p. 10), John Fidler or Fidler was relaxed from the horn for art and part in manslaughter in 1511 (RSCA., I, p. 44), and James Fydlar or Fidlar was one of the mairs of the sheriffdom of Innernes in 1514 (OPS., II, p. 662,663). Nicoll Fydlair, witness in Shedand, 1525 (Goudie, Antiquities, p. 141), Wille Fidlar was fined in 1525 'for the wrangus trublance' of a chaplain in Stirling (SBR., p. 21), Jhoin Fidlair to pay for the teinds of Tronstaye (Tionston), 1565, and John Fidler is recorded in Quholme, Orkney, 1584 (REO., p. 372,306). Gilbert Fidler was accused of witchcraft in Aberdeen in 1597 (SCM., I, p. 137), and Meattie Fidler in Belliscampie is mentioned in 1632 (RSCA., II, p. 324). A field called the 'fitheleres flat' is mentioned in a charter c. 1230 (Inchaffray, p. 48). Fidlair 1565.
