This surname is derived from the name of an ancestor. 'the son of Vig.' Vig, found also as Wig; v. Wigg. 'Wigg or Vig (War), is found in the genealogy of Odin' (Yonge). Both forms lasted long enough to become incorporated into our hereditary nomenclature; but they must have lapsed at an early period. Compound forms, such as Vig-brand, Vig-fus, Vig-hard, Viglaf, and Vig-leik, were all in use, one or two still existing in Scandinavia. With the change from initial 'V' to 'F' and vice versa, compare Venn and Fenn, Vowler and Fowler, Venner and Fenner, &c.; v. Figgin.

A Feg occurs in Yorkshire ante 1086. Domesd., and a Figge in Kent 31. Edwd. III. In the latter co. at a later period the Figgs, Faggs, and Foggs flourished contemporaneously, and may have had a common origin. Other kindred forms are Fig, Figes, Figgs, &c.

In the latter county, at a later period, the Figgs, Faggs, and Foggs flourished contemporaneously, and may have had a common origin; and other kindred forms are Fig, Figes, Figgs, &c."—Lower. All these names are through the Old French, from L. fagus, a beech-tree. Hence also several other French names; as Fay, De la Fayette, &c.
