The original form of this name le Fykeis, which is derived from the Old French ficheis meaning faithful, is found in English records as early as the thirteenth century. but does not appear to have been established in mediaeval Ireland. In this country it is of comparatively recent introduction being chiefly associated with Dublin, where it has been prominent in the publishing and bookselling business since 1809. Darrell Figges (1882-1925), the author who was active in the revolutionary movement from 1914, was born in Dublin. Richard Foley suggested that Ballyviggis in Co. Down was named from a family of Figgis, but O'Donovan derives the place-name from one called Viggs. Reaney equates the name Vigus with Vigors but does not mention Figgis in this connexion.
*Other names numbering eleven or more householders in Ballinrobe in 1783 were Flannelly, Hennelly, Meay, Mellott, O'Mealy, Sheridan and Walsh, but all of these were also found elsewhere.
