This surname comes from Galicia (region of Spain) where there is a language similar to Portuguese. In the Galician language and Portuguese the word, figueira, means 'fig tree'. The shield is formed by five leafs of a fig tree. Its said that the surname originates from the "Figueroa Battle". Every year Muslims went to Catholic lands to request a hundred catholic damsels, but once the Catholic people in the north of Spain fought against Muslims in a fig tree field using branches of fig trees. The Catholic people won and the Figueroa surname was born that day.

There's a town in the north of Spain, in Cataluña called Figueres. It's the place where the famous surrealist painter, Salvador Dali was born. It's all I know about my last name, and that my great grandfather was originally from France, although he emigrated to Argentina in the early 20th century.
