The Slavic form of the surname, Fil, is a Russified, Ukrainian Cossack name. Originally pronounced as "Hvilya", which means 'wave'. Very common in the Black Sea region Cossacks. After the Russian occupation of the Caucasus region, many of the Cossacks settled in the nearby towns. One of the famous ones is Krasnodar, gift to the Cossacks from Catherine the great. In exchange that they will settle and protect the southern Russian borders. During this time many Ukrainian names got Russified. "Hvilya" was often changed to "Filya", and now finally "Fil". In Russian pronunciation it would almost sound like "Fili", but due to English letters "Fil" is the closest Spelling. Another variant of how Fil came to Eastern Europe is during Christianization. In Greek Orthodox, Filipp was a significant man that foretold prophecies. The male name Filipp that would translate from old Greek to, 'horse love'r.
