A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Finn is one of the oldest Old English personal names. Finn occurs in the Old English poem of Widsib as the name of a king of the north Frisiars, and again in Beowulf (vv. 1068,1081, etc.). Bjorkman I, p. 40, gives Fin, Finn, as a Norse personal name and compares Old West Norse Finnr, Old Swedish and Old Danish Fin. He also states that although the name is found in England before the Danish period it has always then a more or less mythological character. In DB., it occurs as Fin and Phin, but has danus or dacus (= danicus) after it, showing the origin of the bearer. William Fyn of Lanarkshire rendered homage, 1296 (Bain, II, p. 204). Soon after the Reformation several persons of the name of Fin or Phin became possessed of the lands of the Abbey of Dunfermline. David Fin resigned his half of the vill and lands of Lymekillis, 1598 (RD. p. 494). Isobel Fynne is recorded in the parish of S. Madois, 1612 (Dunblane), and John Fine in Drumlochie, 1667 (ibid.).
