A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames (1896) by Charles Wareing Endell Bardsley

Of territorial origin from the lands of the name in the parish of Fordyce, Banffshire. Galfridus de Fynleter was juror on an inquest held at Banff in 1342 (REA, I, p. 73). Johanna de Fynletir, wife of Richard de Sancto Claro, resigned to her husband all the land of Fynletir with pertinents in the sheriffdom of Banf in 1366 (RMS, I, 260). Andrew Findlater (1810—1885), a scholar of wide and varied learning, was editor of the first edition of Chambers's Encyclopaedia. Also current as Finlater and Finlator.
