From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

Gaelic Fionnghal, sometimes erroneously written Fionnaghal, (1) a Gaelicized descendant of the Norsemen; (2) a native of the Hebrides. Latinized Fingallus. Down to the end of the eighth century Gaill denoted the foreigners of the southwestern continent. They were no doubt by that time dark in hair and complexion. When the first Norsemen-an extremely blond type-appeered on their shores it seemed nateral that the Irish should call them Finngaill, fair foreigners' (Kuno Meyer). Fingall was also used as a personal name. Fingallus canonicus et sacerdos Candidae Casae, 1235 (Forbes, S. Ninian, p. lii). James Macpherson made his Fingal out of Find mac Cumail.
