Finglas Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

This is a toponymic derived from the village of Finglas, now a suburb of Dublin, and is on record ever since the Anglo-Norman influx in the thirteenth century. From that time families of the name have been mostly located in Dublin or in the counties of the Pale. They are not numerous now, but from mediaeval to early modern times individuals of the name have been constantly in prominent positions.

At first we only meet them in the law-courts of Co. Dublin as jurors or sureties or litigants, e.g. four men called de Fynglas who appeared in the archbishop's court at Finglas in 1256. Similar references occur in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. In the sixteenth they become more numerous. In that century Patrick Fynglas, author of the “Breviat of Ireland”, was chief justice of the King's Bench in 1534 and four others of the name held high legal office. In 1560 Thomas Finglas of Westphalstown was M.P. for Co. Dublin, while in the “Perambulation of the Pale” in 1596 Finglas of Tobersool (alias of Tobertown) was one of the “men of name” in Co. Dublin. At the same time some of them occupied much humbler positions, as for example Patrick, Peter and Roger Fynglas who were among the Irish kern mustered for service in England in 1544. Coming to the seventeenth century we have a Finglas mentioned several times in official correspondence of 1646 to 1648 and described as “lieutenant-colonel of the rebels” and four Co. Dublin men of the name were outlawed for their participation in the Rising of 1641. From that on they were less prominent and lost their status as large landowners; though a document of the Penal Code informs us that Andrew Finglass, 80 year old parish priest of Balrothery, was living at Tobertown, presumably on some portion of the ancestral property in, 1698. They were ‘to be found thenceforward in the professional and commercial classes and notably, too, in the ranks of the established clergy.
