Fink Surname Meaning

From Where Does The Surname Originate? meaning and history

(Ger.) Finch [O.H.Ger. fincho = Danish- Norwegian finke]

Surnames of the United Kingdom (1912) by Henry Harrison

(German) Dweller at the sign of the finch.

Dictionary of American Family Names (1956) by Elsdon Coles Smith

(from a personal characteristic) or (from the name of a female ancestor) or (from the name of a male ancestor) or (from an ancestor's occupation) Fink is the German for “finch” and may be a descriptive word for a person who is small and active. But the Jewish family name Fink may be a matronym. Finkel was a very popular woman’s name in medieval Germany. Another woman’s name was Pinke which (by exchange of “p” and “f,” identical letters in Hebrew and Yiddish) was also read Finke. Sometimes the man’s name Pinhas appears as a variant Fink. As a family name, Fink is extended into Finkenfeld, Finkerfeld, Finkheim, Finkhof, Finkdorf, Finkelstein.

This last form could also refer to a dealer in precious gems, because Finkelstein is the old German word for “diamond.”

— Rabbi Benzion Kaganoff

A provincialism for Finch. See Finck.

Patronymica Britannica (1860) by Mark Antony Lower
