Lower, Berdsley, and Harrison say this name is from "fitchet," a polecat, which seems herdly likely as a surname. Lower also suggests it is perhaps from Montfichett, and also refers to a place near Bayeux called Montfiquet. As Fichet the name is recorded in Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, and Devon in thirteenth century (Guppy, p. 131). This surname, first met with in Scotland in Aberdeen six hundred years ago, was not uncommon in Montrose and Perth in the middle of the nineteenth century, and still exists in Dundee. William Fitchel held a land in the Galugat (Gallowgate) of Aberdeen in 1317 (SCM., V, p. 7). Thomas Fichet of Evirenisse (Inverness) and others complained in 1359 that during a truce their vessel was captured and sunk by the English (Bain, IV, 23). Richard Fichet was elected councillor of Aberdeen, 1398 (CRA., p. 374). His seal, appended to a document of 1405 beers a chevron between three pea-pods (fitches), and S' Ricardi fytchet (Seals Supp., 402). John Fichet, provost of Aberdeen, 1409, appears in following year as bailie of the burgh (NSCM., I, p. 3; RE.,., II, p. 295). William Fichet 'et uxor' were described as 'communes pikares' (petty thieves) in Aberdeen in 1411 (CLA,, p. 4). Nicholas Fechet, servant to the king or Scotland, who had a safe conduct into England in 1424 (Bain, IV, 969), may be Nicholas Fichet, burgess of Aberdeen, 1442 (NSCM., I, p. 6). Matthew Fochet (Fichet, or Fychet), alderman of Aberdeen, 1441 (CRA., p. 6), provost in 1442 (NSCM., I, p. 6) and burgess in 1449 (REA., I, p. 254), may be Matheus Fichel (sic) who was elected common councillor there, 1475 (Cuildry, p. 189). John Fichet of the same burgh was ordered to be ready to enter the king's service in 1476 (SCM,, V, p. 25), John Fychaitt was merchant there, 1541 (ibid., II, p. 33), Elspet Fitchett is recorded in the parish of Guthrie, 1662 (Brechin), and David. Fitchet in Windedge, parish of Oathlaw, 1669 (ibid.). Fechait 1475, Fechat 1489.
