The anglicized form of Giolla-Phadruic, an ancient Irish chief of the X. cent. Its literal meaning is, The Servant of St. Patrick. Such names were common in Ireland soon after the introduction of Christianity. O'Donovan, in Irish Penny Journal, p. 330. Comp. Gilchrist, Gillespie, &c. John Fitz-Patrick, descended from the ancient monarchs of Ireland, was ancestor of the Earls of Ossory, who became extinct in 1818.
